Dr. Bhujanga Rao superannuated from DRDO as Distinguished Scientist and Director General for Naval Systems and Materials, prior to joining NIAS. He specialized in Engineering Acoustics, Warship and Submarine Technology, Weapon Hydrodynamics and Hydro Ballistics, Naval Stealth Technology, Medical Implants, Condition Monitoring, etc. He was the Chief Designer of low cost indigenous Cochlear implant prosthesis for the profoundly deaf; the technology is undergoing multicentric human clinical evaluation. He is the founder President of the Condition Monitoring Society of India. He is recipient of several prestigious awards such as the National Award for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities-2015, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, National Design Award from National Design Research Foundation, Stanley L Ehrlich Gold Medal from India Regional Centre of Acoustical Society of America, Vasvik Award for Mechanical Sciences, DRDO Technology Leadership Award, and Agni Award for Excellence in Self Reliance, among others.

Professor Roy has led Competitive Design research at Cranfield for over sixteen years. Competitive Design is a fact-based approach to studying the whole life of technology intensive products and services and optimising their design, along with efficient design information and knowledge management. He has advocated creative thinking in higher education and has started a number of new initiatives over last ten years, including setting up the Centre for Competitive Creative Design (C4D), a £5.5 million investment from HEFCE, Cranfield University, UAL and EEDA. The Centre aims to embed design thinking across enterprises to improve their creativity and make them more competitive.

Professor Chakrabarti has a BE (Mech Engg, IIEST Shibpur), ME (Mech Design, IISc) and a PhD (Engg Design, Univ of Cambridge UK). After PhD, he led for 10 years the Design Synthesis group at the EPSRC Centre for Excellence at Cambridge. His interests are in creativity, sustainability, informatics, virtual reality and smart manufacturing. He authored/edited 13 books, over 280 peer-reviewed articles, and has 10 patents granted/pending. He is associated with over 15 International Journals in editorial work. He is a member of Advisory Board of the Design Society, UK, CII National Committee on Design, and Jury for India Design Mark for India Design Council. He founded IDeASLab for research into design creativity, sustainability and innovation. He is Programme chair for the Intl Conf series on Research into Design (ICoRD) and other conferences. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Engineering Designers, the first one elected from outside Europe and North America; and received TUM Ambassador Award from TU Munich Germany. He recently received the Outstanding Research Award in the field of Decision Sciences during 2015-17, from Careers360.

He graduated from BHU in Mechanical Eng., Postgraduate in Aero Engineering at IISc. and Ph.D. at IIT Bombay and also he is holding a Bachelor’s degree In Law. He started his career in 1967 at HAL, moved to DRDO HQ in 1970 till 1982. He rejoined HAL in 1982 as Chief Designer in Nasik Division. He was deputed to DRDO in 1985 and assumed charge as Director, ADE; and LCA Programme Director in December 1985 until June 1986 for developing a state-of-art, high technology fighter aircraft of world class. During 1995 he was elevated as Distinguished Scientist by DRDO. As Programme Director and Chief Designer of LCA, he successfully directed the project leading to flight testing and clearance for limited series production.

He is the Fellow of Aeronautical Society of India (former President of the Society), National academy of sciences and Indian National Academy of Engineering. He received distinguished alumnus award from Indian Institute of Science and from IIT Bombay. He was awarded National Aeronautics Prize and FIE Foundation Award in 1996. He received SBI-Pragna Puraskar in 2001. He received the Dr. Y. Nayudamma Memorial Award for 2001. He received the DRDO Technology Leadership Award for 2001. He was honoured with Padma Shri by Government of India in 2002. He received Gujar Mal Modi Science Foundation award for the year 2006. Indian National Academy of Engineering conferred upon him, the lifetime contribution award in eng., for the year 2006.He was awarded Shri Om Prakash Bhasin award for Science & Technology for the year 2007 in the field of engineering including Energy & Aerospace. He received DRDO lifetime achievement award in 2008. Berhampur university conferred on him honorary doctorate in the year 2008.

He was formerly Vice-Chancellor of University of Hyderabad till 15 July 2005. A R&D leader with 27 years of experience of working with institutions like Unilever and ITC Ltd and CGIAR Centre. Recipient of prestigious Cambridge Nehru Scholarship to do PhD from Cambridge (UK). At Unilever, Navin was responsible for 3 major re launches in Beverages category and led some international projects with countries such as Kenya, Japan. He has 10 international patents granted in US and European Union from the work carried out at Unilever and ITC. In addition, at least 16 patents full specifications have also been filed. I was considered for global leadership role in Foods R&D as well as Bioscience with in Unilever before leaving. At ITC, as Chief Scientist, Navin was responsible for carving out a strategy on functional foods by distinguishing Indian population genetics and creating a group to address this specifically.

I believe in participatory development model. We have organized a course on Design for Development under GIAN where we have experimented with the model of identification of local issues focusing (on one social and one technical project) in Mysore District. I am interested in promoting greater community engagement of Higher Education Institutions (HEI) by institutionalizing the community engagement through appropriate policies. Though some institutions are engaged with the communities, still many are not. By making the engagement mandatory and creating appropriate institutions within the HEIs it is possible to evolve grass roots, people centric designs. Appropriate low cost designs are important for both technical and social projects. By providing appropriate incentives it is possible to identify the local issues and evolve solutions.

He is program director of DST-Centre for Policy Research that works on agriculture, water and public health. Venkatesh’s interests lie in water resources management, science and technology policy and planning theory, with a particular focus on the interactions between ecology, society and technology. He is a Fulbright Fellow and a British Chevening Scholar. He did his postdoctoral research at the School of Public Policy, University of Maryland, USA and doctoral work at the Faculty of Policy and Planning, TERI University, New Delhi. Venkatesh toured several drought-stricken states in India and interacted with farmers on developing precision irrigation systems. His writing has provoked responses that include the restoration of smaller streams and wetlands and revamping of the groundwater management programs in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Our aim is to increase the profitability of these farmers by reducing labor costs by 50% by increasing the efficiency of these processes by 50%. Over the past 2 years, Kamal Kisan has served over 10000 farmers with more than 3 crores in labor cost saving for the community.

Currently she is guiding 6 PhD scholars and one candidate had successfully completed PhD under her able guidance. This process is helping her in gaining thorough knowledge on Analytics, Geographic Information System, location based services, Sensor Networks and several variants of wireless communication technologies. From her research work entitled “Spatial and visualization analysis to health care services of Tumkur city” she has gained experience in digitizing health service centres of Tumkur city to conduct various spatial analysis. Currently she has MoU with GKVK, Bangalore to develop “Online soil fertilizer recommendation system” using geo statistics and analytics. This on-going research work is aimed at providing season wise, crop wise online fertilizer recommendations to farmers of Tumkur district to avoid the deterioration of soil health. The scope of the work is to reach all the farmers across the nation and is expected to augment the success of the central government’s Soil Health Card Scheme.

He obtained from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University with specialization in Plant Pathology with core research competencies in molecular plant-microbe interactions, crop and microbial genomics. He has 20 years of research experience after Ph.D. which includes postdoctoral training at Central Institute for Cotton Research India, University of Angers France, University of Alberta Canada, Pennsylvania State University, Florida Atlantic University and Ohio State University in USA. This also includes 10 years of research and teaching experience in VIT. With more than 100 research publications, he has handled funded projects from DST, DBT and CSIR. He is also part of the BioNEST bioincubator project of BIRAC which has recently kick started in VIT with the sanctioned budget of 5.5 crores. Under his leadership, VIT Agri Centre is establishing a model integrated selfsustainable organic farm and developing various agriculturally useful bio-products for commercialization. He also possess several years of experience in field work, farmers training and outreach programmes as well as village adoption schemes for implementation of integrated pest and disease management technologies at the field level.

Meenakshisundaram is a Post Graduate in Mathematics from Loyola College, Madras and holds a Ph.D. in Development Economics from Jamia Milia Islamia National University, New Delhi. He joined the Karnataka cadre of the Indian Administrative Service in 1968. He had held a number of assignments including Secretary, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj department. He was a Visiting Fellow at the University of Sussex, Uk for one year. Besides several articles and papers on Panchayatiraj and Rural Development, he has also published a book on "Decentralization in Developing Countries" with special reference to Nigeria, China and India during 1994. After working as Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister of Karnataka and Joint Secretary to three Prime Ministers of India, he also served as Adviser in the Planning Commission and Secretary in the ministry of Rural Development, and as Dy. Chairman of the State Planning Board. Currently he is the Executive vice Chairman of MYR ADA, a voluntary organization in the field of building people's institutions for development and a Visiting Professor at Institute of Social and Economic Change, Bangalore. Meenakshisundaram is a Post Graduate in Mathematics from Loyola College, Madras and holds a Ph.D. in Development Economics from Jamia Milia Islamia National University, New Delhi. He joined the Karnataka cadre of the Indian Administrative Service in 1968. He had held a number of assignments including Secretary, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj department. He was a Visiting Fellow at the University of Sussex, Uk for one year. Besides several articles and papers on Panchayatiraj and Rural Development, he has also published a book on "Decentralization in Developing Countries" with special reference to Nigeria, China and India during 1994. After working as Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister of Karnataka and Joint Secretary to three Prime Ministers of India, he also served as Adviser in the Planning Commission and Secretary in the ministry of Rural Development, and as Dy. Chairman of the State Planning Board. Currently he is the Executive vice Chairman of MYR ADA, a voluntary organization in the field of building people's institutions for development and a Visiting Professor at Institute of Social and Economic Change, Bangalore. His research interests include rural development, poverty alleviation, voluntary action and decentralized governance.

He has numerous international peer-reviewed publication to his credit, including a book on Sustainability and Human Settlements. He was recently awarded ‘Best Faculty of the Year 2018’ at TechNext India 2018 held at IIT Bombay.

She is particularly interested in developing affordable and sustainable healthcare solutions for the masses. She tries to leverage traditional knowledge and local resources for developing appropriate solutions. TamRas, an affordable, point-of-use drinking water purifier, is one such intervention. TamRas was designed with the households in marginalized communities in mind. It is currently being distributed in villages of Karnataka through a social enterprise model. Dr. Padma Venkat has also developed and tested affordable herbal products that are useful in the management of iron deficiency anemia.

Carrying out R,D & D on decentralized energy technologies (biogas plants and peripherals) and energy system integration into rural life from 1980. Early studies had revealed, being energy resource deficient, rural South India will continue to depend on biomass as the primary energy resource - biogas option has a great potential to convert all compostable organics to fuel gas and rich organic manure. Cattle dung based biogas plants have already spread but have finite potential. Thus new processes / technology for other biomass have to be developed. This is my conviction. Biomass biogas plants can be built to meet all current and future base-load energy needs in villages. Unless such plants are built, operated and managed by people in rural areas, there is not likely to be major impact on policy. My efforts is largely in R&D on biomass biogas plants, demonstrating their use in various areas, making them more attractive to end-users and finally pushing towards a green bio-energy policy.

After PhD, he led for 10 years the Design Synthesis group at the EPSRC Centre for Excellence at Cambridge. His interests are in creativity, sustainability, informatics, virtual reality and smart manufacturing. He authored/edited 13 books, over 280 peer-reviewed articles, and has 10 patents granted/pending. He is associated with over 15 International Journals in editorial work. He is a member of Advisory Board of the Design Society, UK, CII National Committee on Design, and Jury for India Design Mark for India Design Council. He founded IDeASLab for research into design creativity, sustainability and innovation. He is Programme chair for the Intl Conf series on Research into Design (ICoRD) and other conferences. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Engineering Designers, the first one elected from outside Europe and North America; and received TUM Ambassador Award from TU Munich Germany. Arun Venkatesan is the CTO of Villgro Innovations Foundation, leading their health sector investments. He has over 15 years of experience in materials R&D, device development and forward integration of technology into tangible, marketable entities. He has a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and has done post-doctoral research in fuel-cell materials development and micro-fuel-cell fabrication. After about 2 decades of product development work in the US, he has been working in the Chennai Area for the last 5 years. He has worked for various small-scale and start-up companies both in the US and India, in a product development capacity leveraging academic research groups and independent development teams. He has extensive experience coordinating development projects using external vendors for rapid turn-around of various product components. His current focus is the development of affordable and sustainable products for BoP. More recently, his teams have successfully commercialized ‘Brilliance - A low cost phototherapy device for premature babies’ and ‘SmartCane - An affordable navigation aid for the visually impaired’. He is MD of Innovations Factory Ltd, which develops and commercialises healthcare products including for near-patient testing. Over the last 18 years Daniel led complex multi-stakeholder projects in academia and industry. At Cranfield, he led activities in the ATMP sector. His area of expertise is biomaterials development and the related product design. The work resulted in several patents and know-hows for manufacturing novel implantable products. His team has developed and translated several synthetic bone graft products for Indian Biomedical market. Currently, the team is engaged in bioceramic based products for dental tissue regeneration and drug delivery systems for bone diseases, in collaboration with medical professionals. The main research areas of his lab are bone tissue engineering, ceramic coatings for implants, spinal prostheses and injectable bioactive bone cements.

He is leading research on industrial resilience. He completed his PhD at IfM Cambridge, followed by an industrial project funded by Sealed Air Corporation to operationalise his research outcomes into a manufacturing investment risk evaluation tool. He secured further grant from Three Guineas Trust in 2013 to explore “climate change implications for global food supply chains” in collaboration with IfM, 4CMR and British Antarctic Survey. Since then, his research has included food product safety management from developed and developing country perspectives, risk evaluation in pharmaceutical supply, and environment sustainability assessment in global supply networks in four sectors - food, pharmaceuticals, automotive and aerospace. His research continues to focus on sustainability and resilience but is closely related to the emerging manufacturing paradigm of “Distributed Manufacturing”.

He holds an MTech in thermal engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, and PhD in development studies from the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Mumbai. He has recently won the prestigious Elsevier Young Scientist Award 2017 in Social Sciences. He has also won the 2016 International Fellowship of Urban Studies Foundation which will be availed at the McGill University, Montreal during 2018-19. Dr. Nathan is also one of the winners in the GDN Award 2013 in the category of ‘Outstanding Research on Development’. Abstract: India is a country with very low per-capita energy consumption, significant deficit in access to clean energy and concerns around quality of supply. This impedes human development and productive activities. There has been significantly increased policy attention to the access issue in recent times. However, issues around quality / reliability of supply and affordability of energy are still do not get the requisite attention. There are also issues around the design, implementation and monitoring of the access programs which make it difficult to realise their objectives.

Dr. Vijay Kumar Saraswat, is a scientist of international renown and an accomplished researcher with more than four decades of experience spanning over several fields and areas in both basic and applied sciences of defence research. Apart from being a scientist, he is a rare combination of an innovator, technologist and visionary. Born at Gwalior on 25 May 1949, Dr Saraswat completed his engineering from Gwalior; Master of Engineering from IISc Bangalore followed by Ph.D from Osmania University. During his illustrious career, he held the twin posts of Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister and Director General DRDO & Secretary to Dept of Defence R&D. Under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program Dr. Saraswat served as Project Director Prithvi Missile and Programme Director, Ballistic Missile Development (BMD) Programme. He was instrumental in the development of the following technologies: Liquid Propulsion Rocket Engines; PRITHVI (tactical surface-to-surface short-range ballistic missile); DHANUSH (surface-to-surface or ship-to-ship missile); PRAHAAR (a solid-fuel rocket surface-to-surface guided short-range tactical ballistic missile); The successive interceptions of incoming target ballistic missiles at Exo and Endo atmospheres.

In addition, Dr. Saraswat did pioneering work in the indigenous development of the following cuttingedge technologies: Successful test firing of AGNI-5 (medium to intercontinental range ballistic missiles); SHOURYA (a canister launched hypersonic boost-glide surface-to-surface tactical missile); Initial Operational Clearance for Light Combat Aircraft TEJAS (single-seat, single-jet engine, multirole light fighter); Induction of INS Arihant (the lead ship of India's Arihant class of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines).

Under his leadership, DRDO provided the technologies developed by them for societal benefits: Solar Powered Modular Green Shelters, Bio-Digesters, AAHAR programmes, Explosive detection kit, Diagnostic Units for Dengu

Dr. Saraswat’s pioneering efforts have taken shape into setting up of the following establishments: Research & Innovation Centre at IIT Madras; MILIT Centre for Training needs of armed forces on S&T; CERT for reporting, auditing and handling emergency response of Information Security Incidents; CHESS – futuristic technology Centre for High Energy Laser and Microwave devices; Kyrgyz-Indian Mountain Bio-Medical Research Centre at Kyrgyzstan;and Advanced Combustion Research Centers at IISc and IIT(M) and Chickengunia.

Till recently, Dr Saraswat was DAE Homi Bhabha Chair and initiated development of technologies for Energy Security namely Bio-Mass, Solid Waste Management, Fuel Cells, Concentrated Solar Power, Multi-Junction Photovoltaic Cells, Clean Coal Technologies etc., in the country at various Industrial and Academic Institutions in addition to bringing new dimensions to Aerospace Manufacturing.

Dr. Saraswat is the recipient of many national and international awards including: PADMABHUSHAN (2013); PADMASHRI (1998); Vikram Sarabhai Memorial Award from Indian Science Congress (2011); Prof Jai Krishna Memorial Award by Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE); Dr. Y. Meenakshisundaram is a Post Graduate in Mathematics from Loyola College, Madras and holds a Ph.D. in Development Economics from Jamia Milia Islamia National University, New Delhi. He joined the Karnataka cadre of the Indian Administrative Service in 1968. He had held a number of assignments including Secretary, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj department. He was a Visiting Fellow at the University of Sussex, Uk for one year. Besides several articles and papers on Panchayatiraj and Rural Development, he has also published a book on "Decentralization in Developing Countries" with special reference to Nigeria, China and India during 1994. After working as Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister of Karnataka and Joint Secretary to three Prime Ministers of India, he also served as Adviser in the Planning Commission and Secretary in the ministry of Rural Development, and as Dy. Chairman of the State Planning Board. Currently he is the Executive vice Chairman of MYR ADA, a voluntary organization in the field of building people's institutions for development and a Visiting Professor at Institute of Social and Economic Change, Bangalore. Professor Chakrabarti has a BE (Mech Engg, IIEST Shibpur), ME (Mech Design, IISc) and a PhD (Engg Design, Univ of Cambridge UK). After PhD, he led for 10 years the Design Synthesis group at the EPSRC Centre for Excellence at Cambridge. His interests are in creativity, sustainability, informatics, virtual reality and smart manufacturing. He authored/edited 13 books, over 280 peer-reviewed articles, and has 10 patents granted/pending. He is associated with over 15 International Journals in editorial work. He is a member of Advisory Board of the Design Society, UK, CII National Committee on Design, and Jury for India Design Mark for India Design Council. He founded IDeASLab for research into design creativity, sustainability and innovation. He is Programme chair for the Intl Conf series on Research into Design (ICoRD) and other conferences. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Engineering Designers, the first one elected from outside Europe and North America; and received TUM Ambassador Award from TU Munich Germany. Last academic year, he was the Subir Chowdhury Fellow on Quality and Economics at the London School of Economics. As a part of civil society interventions through Peoples Foundation for Scientific Socio Economic Development, he has been involved in education, health, and livelihood issues in a few urban slums and villages of Maharashtra, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh. He holds an MTech in thermal engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, and PhD in development studies from the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Mumbai. He has recently won the prestigious Elsevier Young Scientist Award 2017 in Social Sciences. He has also won the 2016 International Fellowship of Urban Studies Foundation which will be availed at the McGill University, Montreal during 2018-19. Dr. Nathan is also one of the winners in the GDN Award 2013 in the category of ‘Outstanding Research on Development’. He is a recipient of Young Scientist Award conferred at Odisha Environment Congress – 2012. In the doctoral years, his research papers have received ‘best paper award’ in four colloquiums: Doctoral Colloquim-2010 (IIM, Ahmedabad), COSMAR-2007 and 2008 (IISc, Bangalore), and Students Colloquium on Development Research-2007 (IGIDR, Mumbai).

Prof Ramamurthy is a well known Indian nuclear scientist with a broad range of contributions from basic research to science administration. Prof Ramamurthy started his career in Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai in the year 1963. He has made important research contributions, both experimental and theoretical, in many areas of nuclear fission and heavy ion reaction mechanisms, statistical and thermodynamic properties of nuclei, physics of atomic and molecular clusters and low energy accelerator applications. During the period 1995-2006, Prof Ramamurthy was fully involved in science promotion in India as Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Science & Technology (DST), New Delhi.

He was also the Chairman of the IAEA Standing Advisory Group on Nuclear Applications for nearly a decade. After retirement from government service, Prof Ramamurthy, in addition to continuing research in Nuclear Physics in the Inter-University Accelerator Centre, New Delhi has also been actively involved in human resource development in all aspects of nuclear research and applications. Prof Ramamurthy is also a Chairman, Recruitment and Assessment Board, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and Member, National Security Advisory Board. In recognition of his services to the growth of Science and Technology in the country, Prof Ramamurthy was awarded one of the top civilian awards of the country, the Padma Bhushan, by the Government of India in 2005.
