An international symposium on Science and Beyond: Cosmology, Technology and Indian Traditions will be held at NIAS under the program of “Science and Spiritual Quest” of the Templeton Foundation, USA. This symposium will bring together scientists, philosophers, psychologists and spiritual leaders from India and the rest of the world to dialogue on what essentially constitutes the pursuit of knowledge. This will facilitate defining the frontiers and what falls in the ‘beyond’ of scientific knowledge. Discussions on questions of philosophical and spiritual issues according to the convictions and experiences of scientists as well as discussions on scientific and empirical questions according to philosophers and spiritual leaders are expected to generate a forum to bridge knowledge communities and unite them for global concerns both at personal and institutional levels. It is particularly expected that the conference will bring forth a dialogue, in a global context, on Indian traditions of science, art, music, medicine, philosophy, psychology and spirituality. The program of the conference will include invited lectures, panels and discussions. For more details, contact Sangeetha Menon (prajnana@yahoo.com)

State Level One-Day Consultation on "Implementing and Monitoring the Convention for the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) for the distinguished members of the State Legislature" organised by Gender Studies Unit of NIAS The Constitution of India is based on the principles of equality and guarantees equality before law and equal protection to all its citizens. It not only guarantees Fundamental Rights and freedoms, but also prohibits discrimination on the basis of religion, race, caste, sex, and place of birth. The Indian Constitution also provides for affirmative action and positive discrimination by empowering the State to make special provisions for women. In spite of the positive strides made by the country spanning several decades, translating de jure to de facto gender equality has remained as one of India's major challenges. It is a fact that women continue to be denied their social, economic, civil and political rights in many spheres.
India has ratified various international conventions and human rights instruments of the United Nations, thus committing itself to fulfill the obligation of eliminating all forms of discrimination against women and promote equal rights for them. Key among them is the ratification of the Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), in 1993. Ratifying the CEDAW implies that the State recognises the discrimination and inequality meted out to women, the need for state action and to be held accountable at the national and international levels. It is therefore obligatory for the State to prevent and prohibit discrimination, identify and redress, impose sanctions against discriminating acts, implement proactive measures and accelerate de facto equality.
The CEDAW framework is based on the rights approach. The principles of equality, non-discrimination and state obligation provide the framework for analysing the information and formulating policies, legislative reforms, programmes and strategies for the development of women
Purpose of the Consultation
It is the obligation of the country to fulfill the implementation of CEDAW and report to the UN Committee once every four years of the progress made in effecting substantive equality. Therefore, it is also the responsibility of every state to implement CEDAW. The aim of this consultation is to familarise the esteemed members of the State Legislature to CEDAW and its application for facilitating and monitoring State action with particular focus on the articles related to political participation.
