Abstract:  Iran's interest in nuclear energy began in 1956 during the Shah's regime. This period witnessed Iran receiving assistance from the US and the West.. The current crisis over Iran's nuclear programme began in August 2002 when certain clandestine aspects of Iran's nuclear programme were first made public. In July 2015, Iran and the P5+1 successfully negotiated a detailed agreement called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The JCPOA limits Iran's capability to build nuclear weapons in exchange for lifting the various sanctions and restrictions that had been imposed on Iran over the years. The talk will analyse the nuclear agreement, its verification measures and the wider non proliferation implications of the agreement. It will also analyse what a resurgent Iran would mean for the region as a whole.
