Abstract:

Today, India is considered as a prominent space faring nation along with the United States, Russia, France, China and Japan.  The country has made notable achievements in the domain of satellites, launch vehicles, ground infrastructure, space applications and space exploration domains. Besides, it is offering many space services on a commercial basis globally.  In this context, it is pertinent to note that nearly six decades back, India began its space programme amidst many disadvantages compared to the pioneering space faring nations of the day.  In spite of this, the country’s progressive accumulation of essential space capabilities during this period makes it exceptional vis-a-vis other space faring nations.  In this endeavour, technological elements acquired from external sources as well as the indigenously developed ones have contributed significantly. Against this background, the study “Contribution of External and Indigenous Technological Elements to India’s Space Capabilities: An Appraisal” explores the nature and extent of contribution of acquired as well as indigenously developed technological elements to the Indian space programme.
