NIAS Wednesday Discussion

(As part of NIAS-DST Training Programme for Women Scientists (under DISHA Scheme) on

“Science for Progress in India: Focus on Sustainability”)

Women Cannot Do Science

Sundar Sarukkai

Professor in Philosophy, National Institute of Advanced Studies

Chairperson: Sujata Chakroborty, Director (Mineral Physics), Geological Survey of India,

1st March, 2017, JRD Tata Auditorium, NIAS, 9.30 am

Abstract: What is common between famous philosophers like Aristotle and Kant, scientists like Darwin, Summers and Tim Hunt, and … aliens like Trump? They all believed, like countless other men (scientists, philosophers and politicians included) continue to believe today, that “women cannot do science” … or at least cannot do science as well as the men.  Hmm.

About the Speaker:

Prof. Sundar Sarukkai is trained in physics and philosophy, but obviously they have both not helped him become smarter. In spite of his many books in the philosophy of the natural and social sciences, he cannot give a clear answer whether women can do better science than men but can only confidently assert that men are more stupid than women in general.

All are cordially invited
