Abstract: This is the age of mouse-click travel, unselfconscious selfies and armies of travel bloggers dishing out breathless advice on where to go, what to see, do or eat. Travel has sprouted a halo in recent times and the cyberspace is bursting with clichéd accounts of the sights and smells of exotic destinations. A virtual battalion of social media ínfluencers’ has crawled out of the woodwork to flood your phone with in-your-face Instagram trivia, inciting jealousy, inadequacy and at times, even depression in us lesser mortals who cannot match such compulsive mobility, cupidity and/or gluttony.  No matter where you go, someone has gone there before you and has already bragged about it on cyberspace.

As someone who has travelled to 66 countries in the past quarter century, some, multiple times, and published over 400 travelogues in national print media over the past two decades (check them out on, I can tell you travel is as much about the quotidian, the absurd, the discordant and droll in alien locations as it is about the exotic, the exquisite, the extraordinary and the exceptional. A lot of travel is about misguided expectations, mistaken anticipation, misadventures and even missed connections.  For me, travel has often been about my ability to grit my teeth and emerge unscathed out of unwonted predicaments and be able to laugh at myself!

I shall be sharing some of my travel misadventures with you!

About the speaker: Sudha Mahalingam is currently Dr. Raja Ramanna Chair Professor at the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bengaluru.
