Abstract
Archaeological research in Garo hills by scholars have led to the identification and discovery of prehistoric cultures. Most of the early research works, exploratory or excavations, present the findings of the sites in terms of material culture discovered and collected. Explorations were carried out along the valleys of the Rongram, Ganol and Simsang rivers; with a concentration on West, East, Central and South Garo Hills districts leading to the discovery of several sites. These works majorly discussed the tool typology and site of discovery. Beyond a basic lithic study, reconstruction of past lifeways based on these artefacts and interpretation of material culture is trifling, with few attempts being made in recent times. Lying in the tropical humid zone, Garo hills receives sufficient rainfall to facilitate several huge and some small rivers and streams surrounded by dense wooded forests and undulating hills. Hence with favourable environmental settings, Garo hills turned into a fertile area for human habitation. The study is based on primary data collected during 2015 – 2018 field seasons and secondary data of earlier research. With the backdrop of the earlier researches, the study was undertaken to provide a systematic and holistic understanding of Garo Hills. The study revealed the existence of early Holocene traditions in Garo Hills with an indication of adaptation to the local tradition and occupation of contiguous sites.
